Esto es Cádiz — IX CILE Special Edition
About the project
"Esto es Cádiz" is a tourism and culture magazine about the province of Cádiz. This 114-page special edition was produced as a companion publication to the IX International Congress of the Spanish Language (IX CILE) — held in Cádiz from 27 to 30 March 2023 and inaugurated at the Gran Teatro Falla in the presence of H.M. the King and Queen of Spain. Organised by the RAE and ASALE under the theme "Lengua española, mestizaje e interculturalidad. Historia y futuro," the congress gathered over 300 participants from across the Spanish-speaking world, making it one of the most significant cultural events in the Spanish language in recent decades.
The special edition served as a cultural and touristic introduction to Cádiz for the congress delegates: a 114-page journey through the city's history, gastronomy, architectural heritage, natural landscapes, and the distinctive character of a place that has been a crossroads of civilisations for three millennia.
I was responsible for the full editorial design of the publication: art direction of the cover, complete interior layout across 114 pages, typographic system, photographic composition, infographic design, and adaptation of the magazine's visual identity to the institutional scale of the event.
The main design challenge was to reconcile the warmth and local personality of the established "Esto es Cádiz" identity with the international reach and institutional weight of an event of this significance — producing a piece that could function simultaneously as a travel guide, a cultural essay, and an ambassador for the city.
